The 519 Media Reference Guide

Website Design

The Story

A colourful digital guide to fair and inclusive reporting. Driven by The 519, Toronto's first 2SLGBTQ+ community space, in response to consistently poor representation of Queer communities in the media, this digital guide is a first of its kind Canadian resource for folks to learn more about respectful media representation for queer, 2 Spirit, trans, and gender-diverse communities.

The 519 was already envisioning a revitalized version of their inaugural Media Reference Guide document, and I was able to propose and demonstrate to them that the guide could be so much more than a PDF on their website. Together, we workshopped it into a piece that has become one of the foremost media resources in North America that addresses 2SLGBTQ+ reporting.

I was tasked with creating a look and feel for the guide that combined the seriousness of media misrepresentation with the ever-present joy and colour in the Queer community. Inspired by the idea of broadcast waves, the iconic pride rainbow, and the "ripple effect" this guide will have on the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, a logo mark and corresponding stripe motif were created to give the site a dynamic flow, and break up the often dense areas of instructive text.

The digital reference guide provides informative content in numerous ways including narrative passages of text, resource post-types, vocabulary, key terms, and Do's & Don'ts lists, giving users the opportunity to find key pieces of guidance for a specific story, review and brush up on topics quickly prior to an interview, or complete more in-depth research.
