The 519

2022 Annual Report

The Story

A bright and tenacious impact report ensuring no queer folks are left behind. After two years of programming in response to a global pandemic, The 519, Toronto’s 2SLGBTQ+ community hub, successfully relaunched many of its in-person programs and community connections. To showcase this achievement in their 2022 annual report, they chose the impactful title “Nobody Left Behind.”

As the report’s central theme, it was key to conceptualized ideas around how to bring the phrase “Nobody Left Behind” to life through the report’s graphic and visual tone. The design approach also needed to strike a balance between boldness and accessibility to align with The 519’s essential mission of fearless activism and inclusive programming. A striking typographic design with stacked and interlocking text captures The 519’s tenacious advocacy and repeated collective action, and conveys a sense of building impact over time. Vibrant, eye-catching colours and stripes call back to traditional Pride aesthetics without being cliché, and creates highly accessible colour contrast with bold black and white accents. More practically, the use of large headlines and asymmetrical columns allows for more dynamic integration of photos and text, and large blocks of colour break up statistics and emphasize crucial content such as testimonials, ensuring the report is both exciting to look at and easy to read.
